Legacy: Portraits of the Environment [TSE]

THURSDAY, 6:15 PM–7:45 PM
COLIN FINLAY
Sponsored by Blurb & Academy of Art University

Whether it's the roar of the crowd at the Super Bowl, the roar of a lion in Africa, or the roar of a Polar Bear in the Arctic Circle, the ability to safely store, protect and archive photos and videos in the most remote shooting conditions is as critical to a photographer's success as getting the shot itself. You can find photographer Colin Finlay in the far corners of the world without the comfort of his studio, hotel room, or even electricity. What he captures with his cameras is typically gone in a moment, never to be seen or achieved again. For any photographer, a plan for protecting and storing photos and videos is important. For Finlay, it could be a career-ending mistake if not done properly. Finlay will share his experiences in these shooting environments and discuss how he manages to salvage his sanity by implementing systems that protect the very reason he is there.

Stretching the Limits of Printing and Creativity [FSE]

FRIDAY, 6:15 PM–7:45 PM
MARK POWER
Sponsored by Hewlett-Packard

Join Magnum photographer Mark Power in a rare U.S. appearance as he shares his distinctive vision and his recent exhibition that incorporates a fascinating mix of creativity, craft, and technique. Power's most recent project, Destroying the Laboratory for the Sake of the Experiment, exhibited in London during July 2010, is a collaboration between Power and poet Daniel Cockrill. This multifaceted project began in 2006, with the two artists traveling together to different parts of England, usually a town or a city, and sharing similar experiences, but reacting independently through their chosen media. It is a continually evolving exploration of the relative nature of perception. Don't miss this memorable event, which also includes special remote appearances by other photo luminaries.
