Harry Benson: Being There
Harry Benson

Sponsored by

Scottish born photojournalist Harry Benson arrived in America with the Beatles in 1964 and knew he would stay. The Canon USA Explorer of Light's presentation followed by Q & A will highlight his 60 year career as a photojournalist.

As Harry shows photographs he will tell what it was like to photograph the last eleven American presidents--from Eisenhower to Obama; to be next to Bobby Kennedy the night he was assassinated; in the room with Richard Nixon when he resigned; on the Civil Rights Meredith March with Martin Luther King, Jr., next to Mrs. King at her husband's funeral; on clandestine maneuvers with the IRA and the KKK. Harry was there when the Berlin Wall went up and when it came down, and has photographed the Gulf War and gone undercover in Afghanistan.

His photographs of celebrities range from Frank Sinatra to Elizabeth Taylor, and from Jack Nicholson to Brad Pitt, from the Rolling Stones to Amy Winehouse, and from Mohammed Ali to Michael Jackson.

Twice named Magazine Photographer of the Year, this year Harry was made a Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth for service to photography.
With 40 one-man exhibits and 13 books published, his photographs are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.; Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow; and the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. Harry Benson: Photographs will be published in December by powerHouse books.

Nuts & Bolts of the Editorial Portrait
Chris Dougherty, Nigel Parry

Get a glimpse into the realities of working as an editorial photographer in this informative Q&A with People magazine's director of photography Chris Dougherty and photographer Nigel Parry. Dougherty and Parry will discuss their collaboration over the years as well as highlight behind-the-scenes stories explaining the highs and lows of working in the editorial world. Parry will take the audience through how he carved a path for himself shooting editorial celebrity portraiture after working as a commercial photographer for over 20 years. He has also expanded his personal work to contain a similar aesthetic to his commercial and editoriawork. As he blurs the boundaries between the two, he will explain the freedom of working creatively in the commercial realm and his methods for directing and captivating his subjects.
