Heisler's presentation and details of the annual award will be held on Thursday, October 22nd at 6:00 p.m. inside the Jacob Javits Convention Center -- IE Seminar Hall, Rooms IE15/IE16 inside the Jacob Javits Convention Center.
The "Arnold Newman Prize" for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture will be available as a separate category entry in PDN's Photo Annual competition and will recognize an individual for their innovative approach to photographic portraiture. The prize is sponsored by the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation with support from Maine Media Workshops, the American Society of Media Photographers, and Photo District News.
In addition, the Newman Foundation has established an endowment at Maine Media Workshops to provide financial assistance to students in the form of grants.
"The Arnold Newman Prize for new directions in portraiture, and the endowment program established at Maine Media Workshops are wonderful ways to maintain our father's legacy and all his accomplishments as a photographer while providing an opportunity for other photographers to explore their creative vision," explains David Newman, Arnold's son and co-founder of the foundation with his brother Eric.
"By offering financial assistance from the Foundation and public exposure through the Maine Media Workshops and their partners, we are able to encourage and reward excellence in photography," says Eric Newman. "Our parents would be pleased with the opportunities their foundation presents to young and talented photographers," Newman added.
"Arnold Newman was one of the greatest photographers of our time and an individual who truly danced to the beat of his own drum," says Gregory Heisler, world-renowned photographer who got his start in photography as Arnold Newman's assistant. "But more than that, he was a great teacher and an amazing storyteller. I am honored to be a part of this event to pay tribute to both Arnold and Augusta and their lifelong accomplishments and contributions to the field of photography," Heisler concluded.
Details of the "Arnold Newman Prize" will be made available on October 22 during PhotoPlus Expo and through ASMP, Maine Media Workshops, and Photo District News.
